Operation for cancer

The removed part of the colon is analysed by anatomical pathologists to assess what stage the tumour has reached.

Depending on the stage the tumour has reached, a course of chemotherapy is proposed to reduce the risk of recurrence. This chemotherapy is carried out during a course of two-hour sessions without any need for a prolonged stay in hospital. Its secondary effects are not as violent as those caused by other forms of chemotherapy.

From the digestive standpoint, normal functions are usually resumed.

Surveillance is highly recommended. It is carried out by the team working in conjunction with the general practitioner. An X-ray of the lungs, an abdominal ultrasound, a blood test and, less frequently, a colonoscopy are required. The frequency of these examinations is defined for each particular case.
